Harvest Monday Aug 16th, 2010

It's tomato time!  After 2 really bad tomato years, we're celebrating here in the northeast.

That's not even half of what I harvested this week.  They're coming on quite strong and we're loving every minute of it.

I'm also still harvesting potatoes as needed.  These are Kennebecs that were used for a potato salad.  We had a big birthday party to celebrate the kid's birthdays with family and neighbors.  Since they're so close together, we always have one big party for the both of them.  It was nice to have all the vegetables come straight from the garden.

This is the second harvest of beets.  There are still quite a few more to go.

What isn't pictured are the cucumbers, beans, green peppers, jalapenos and anaheims.

We're finally getting some rain this week, which is wonderful.  I'm hoping these harvests keep up.  We're well on our way to having a majority of our vegetables come from my garden this year.

This post is part of Daphne's Dandelions Harvest Monday.  Go check out what everyone is harvesting this week.

  4. LOL, your harvest pictures look like my harvest pictures! I think we have twin gardens, as mine featured tomatoes, potatoes and beets, too. Your Kennebecs are so much prettier than mine. No more hilling with leaves in my future, I don't think it was good for the potatoes.

  5. Kelly, we New Englanders need to stick together!

Meemsnyc, I love beets. I can never seem to grow enough.

Debiclegg, we love them from the garden. They were a huge hit at the birthday party as well.

Granny, we all seem to be harvesting similar things these days. I'm really happy with the potatoes this year.

  6. Isn't it nice to have a good tomato year finally? Now I get to see what kinds of tomato harvests the rest of the country gets to have. Yum. I spent this morning canning. Hopefully I'll get to do it again next Monday.

  8. I wonder if all that heat has something to do with the good harvests. I am also astonished at how trees have grown. There are three young trees in my vicinity that have grown by leaps and bounds this year.

Welcome to the New England tropics. Too bad we'll be underwater in a few years :-)

  9. Beautiful tomatoes. Mine suffered through a dry month and horrible heat and it's taken it's toll on them. I am managing to get as much pizza sauce canned as I'm able!

  10. I don't know how your tomatoes were the last two years, but I would say that you definitely deserve to have a celebratory tomato year this year! Your kennebec tomatoes look beautiful! I'm kind of scared to try my hand at potatoes, somehow I think that they are "harder" to grow than other vegetables. I should just suck it up and try it next year. It sounds wonderful to be able to meet all your vegetables needs straight from your own garden!

  11. Woohoo! What a great bunch of tomatoes and the beets and potatoes are pretty impressive too! Well done on providing so much of your families vegetable needs from your own food production garden. It really is an accomplishment that should be savored (literally) and appreciated.

  12. Karen Anne, it's a little freaky isn't it?

Leigh, I hope you get lots of sauce!

Thyme, potatoes are easy! They're extremely tasty too. Like everything else, they taste so much better from the garden.

Laura, someday I'll be as good at this as you are. You are my inspiration!

  13. I think a lot of people are feeling the same way in regards to tomatoes and rain. We just got another nice soaker storm. Sorely needed.

    Nice harvest!
