What do you do with the first tomato?

I'm being very selfish.  I'm eating the first tomato all by myself.  I called Hubby and asked if he wanted some, but he didn't want to come down from his workshop.  So it's mine!

This is the first year that I have major competition for the tomatoes.  Hubby hasn't liked them in the past.  Now he does.  In years past, I've made them into tuna sandwiches.  I've also done greek salads with just tomatoes, cukes, feta and dressing.   Of course, all of this is after slicing off a piece, adding sea salt and slurping it up still warm from the garden.  This year is hummus, cucumber salad, tomatoes with sea salt and pita bread.  I must say, it is absolutely wonderful.  There is another tomato not far behind this one, so I don't have too long to wait.  Yum!

  1. My first one was a cherry tomato and the others in the field aren't ready yet. I brushed the dirt off my fingers - weeding - grabbed it by the top - brushed it off on my pants and ate it standing in the middle of the garden... YUM!!!

Mine likes tomatoes in any form... but uncooked.. his loss.

  2. Farmwife, I haven't grown cherry tomatoes in years. Being the only one to eat them, there were too many. Your hubby sounds like mine. This is the first year he's eaten them uncooked.

  6. I cut my first (cherry) tomato in half, and shared it with Mr. Granny. I've done that with each one since, but I only give him half if they taste good. I guess I'm the official tomato sampler.

  7. Karen Anne, I love hummus too. I love tomatoes with salt, pepper and mayo.

    Angela, yum!

Granny, you're so good! I was selfish taking the tomato for myself. Honestly, Hubby didn't mind too much.

  9. Yum - that is one of my favorite summer meals! And I finally have a source for garbanzos now, and my olives are done curing. I'm putting pita bread on the bake list. Thanks so much for the suggestion!

  10. My husband hates tomatoes raw, but he loves them cooked in sauces. I love just sprinkling some sea salt and in my mouth. Delicious.

  11. hahaha...lucky you. I'm sure hubby will get his share soon enough. I used to not like tomatoes eater but I'm come to realize that if you keep eating something, eventually it grows on you and then you begin to appreciate it. (I doubt that will ever happen with liver though).

  12. The first tomato is always eaten with nothing on it. Plain. Now I'm eating them a lot of ways, but one of my favorites is cucumber salad with cherry tomatoes.

  13. First tomato is often used to make a classic BLT sandwich and if not that... then eaten still sun warmed from the vine. I have been known not to share the first one, but this year I was nice and let my husband have half of it - cut into quarters and just a light sprinkle of salt. Delish!
