February seed starting

Things are starting to get busy here.  This week I potted up the lettuces, basil and dill.  I had planted to much dill and lettuce, so some of the seedlings went into the compost pile.  This always kills me, but is necessary.  I don't have unlimited space inside or out.  Everything is looking good, but there is a white fungus starting on my onions.  I've started spraying them with a diluted hydrogen peroxide mix.  Hopefully that will keep them healthy.  Onions have been my nemesis in the past.
This was also the time for me to start the next round of seeds.  The list for today is:
Prize Choy pac choi
Tatsoi
Nutribud broccoli
Early Jersey wakefield cabbage
Shasta daisy
Impatiens
Black beauty eggplant
Early jalapeno
Anaheim pepper
Poblano pepper
Big Red bell pepper
Quadrato D'Asti gallo pepper
This is my first year growing the Asian greens, eggplants and flowers.  The rest I've grown in one form or another, although many are new varieties to me.  Everything is on a heat mat.  The eggplants and peppers will stay on the heat mat until they are ready to go outside.

There are some signs of impending spring around here, but we still have at least another month until anything can be done outside.  They are predicting snow over much of the week, it is still February in New England.

  1. I am loving the sunshine and slightly warmer temps here in New England - it's making me dream about my garden. :) Still waiting for my seeds to arrive, but they will be going under the lights once they show up.

  2. Booksnyarn, the nice weather is making me even more anxious for winter to be over. I'm loving it a little too much.

  5. I'm so excited! You indoor starts are looking GREAT! I've started testing my seeds for viability (that I saved last year). I also started some herbs & am trying to save some other herbs that didn't do so well in the past few weeks of neglect. I got my first order seeds from Baker Creek a few days ago.

Here's the kicker- we've got 3-4" of snow on the ground & it's STILL SNOWING! LOL

  6. Michaela, we'll be getting that snow later this week. It's nice to be able to get a jump start on the season. You need an even bigger jump start than I do!

  8. Everyone's onions look so much bigger than mine. I hate when I have to wait for seed (still don't have the one I ordered). I ought to check my schedule again and see what needs planting soon.

  9. Daphne, I just trimmed my onions today. I was lucky that the onions I ordered from Fedco were the ones they had. It stinks when the stuff you need isn't ready when you need it.

  10. Looking good! I'm a bit late on the peppers and eggplant I think...oh well. I'm really excited to grow the early Jalapeno as well. Any ideas on when you will set them out?

  11. Thomas, you aren't necessarily late. Some wait until mid March or so. I've just never had any luck with them if I wait the long. Maybe my house is too cold. They'll get set out between May 15 and 30th. Our last frost date tends to be around the first week of May. I tend to plant out earlier than many on the 15th. It seems most in the area wait until Memorial Day weekend.
